Major League Soccer: A Look Back At Los Angeles vs. New York Red Bulls Match

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

This was MLS’ version of Clash Of The Cash as the two teams with the highest payrolls squared off in this match. New York is has a payroll of $ 15.7 million although Los Angeles has a payroll of $ 11 million. The match was specific lively as they played to a 1-1 draw in the House Depot Center.

New York got off to a wonderful commence scoring in the fourth minute when a via ball by Dane Richards discovered Thierry Henry in the box who sidestepped Donovan Ricketts, Los Angeles’ goalkeeper, and slotted it back into the net. Nonetheless, the early lead led to New York sitting back a bit which invited Los Angeles to pressure and they did. They had many close chances such as a objective line clearance by Tim Ream soon after it looked like Landon Donovan was going to score on any open net. Donovan would ultimately equalize when he headed in a corner from David Beckham in the 41st.

The second half started strongly from Los Angeles, but New York eventually began to uncover a foothold in the game and they had been able to get better hold of possession as Los Angeles’ pressing play wasn’t sustainable for 90 minutes.

It is a result that most likely leaves New York happier. It was the first time they didn’t control possession and there were clearly some holes in defense. The team played with two high of a line whilst allowed Los Angeles to expose the lack of speed in the center of defense. They were also clearly missing Teemu Tainio to anchor their defense as Medhi Ballouchy tried, but that actually is not his natural position and it showed.

For Los Angeles, they were missing Edson Buddle from last season. Juan Pablo Angel missed a couple fantastic chances given the service he was acquiring. Chad Barrett was working challenging, but by no means made a massive impact on the game. The team’s major threat was Landon Donovan running behind the defense, which New York did greater in handling throughout the second half. Right after that, Los Angeles looked to put in crosses, but the forwards in no way capitalized.

Searching forward, both teams are in strong positions leading their conferences, but New York do seem to be the stronger side as of proper now, but Los Angeles are an in-form striker away from being right up there with them.

Premier League: Another Look At Manchester United Victory Over Chelsea

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

It was a rapidly start off by Manchester United finding a objective 36 seconds into the game when Javier Hernandez got behind the defense. United added another when Vidic headed in a Ryan Giggs cross in the 23rd minute. Chelsea got one back via Frank Lampard just before the 70th minute, but even after that they never really sustained attacks and in a lot of methods had been lucky to not conceded much more objectives.

Nonetheless, the factor that I most noted in this game was the end of the Chelsea midfield. The group seems to have deteriorated. Frank Lampard looks a shell of a player he utilized to be, but Michael Essien has lost a step as he by no means when unleashed a classic run into the attacking third. Ramires has energy, but there is a lack of penetration that effort alone can’t accomplish. They are one of the few top teams that had been not able to overpower the United midfield. Furthermore, they don’t have any true wingers to maximize the play on the wings.

That is where Manchester United won the league, in my opinion. Their forwards have hat hot and cold spells and the midfield has not been overpowering, but there have been few games when Manchester United hasn’t dominated the wings and that is one of the greatest factors they will likely be crowned champions once again. In this game, Manchester United showed off all of their strengths. Rooney and Hernandez were menaces for the defense. Valencia destroyed Ashley Cole. Carrick and Giggs were composed and the defense dealt with most threats.

Going back to Chelsea, the team could be ready for a decent overhaul. The defense appears solid but there are problems of depth and David Luiz needs a lot more encounter as he made a number of mistakes in the 1st half which includes not communicating nicely with John Terry on the first goal. The attack looks to want lots of retooling. Malouda and Kalou have flashes but not consistent. However, the larger problem is Drogba and Torres not playing nicely together. Drogba ended the season as their most productive forward, but he appears the most likely to move of the forward group to be moved on in the summer.

Even so, United will celebrate what was pretty a lot a title clincher. It hasn’t been the most beautiful of performances all season, but they have been dominant at home with 52 points out of a possible 54. Their road performances haven’t been great, but now they only want a point on the road next week and a 12th Premier League title will be theirs.

Spain 4, United States 0: Player Ratings

Monday, June 6th, 2011

It wasn’t a excellent performance by the United States as they lost four- to Spain and even had an early objective called off incorrectly on an offside call. The United States held out until the 28th, but three objectives in 13 minutes put the game to bed prior to halftime. Alvaro Negredo scored a goal in between two Santi Cazorla objectives. Fernando Torres total the scoring with a late objective. Here are my ratings for the game.

Tim Howard𔃃
He produced some good saves early, but he didn’t have a chance on the goals.

Jonathan Spector𔃁
Silva dominated him in the initial half and he was fairly ineffective when pushed up into right midfield. It is strange that he didn’t get anytime in the center of midfield specifically in the second half.

Oguchi Onyewu𔃁.five
Onyewu didn’t appear up to the pace of the game as during the Spain objectives in the initial half, he didn’t seem close to anybody. His form is a large question mark for the team.

Tim Ream𔃂
Ream and Lichaj left too considerably space between them in the 1st half, but Ream was composed on the ball and looked more settled in the second half.

Eric Lichaj𔃂
Lichaj is fast and wasn’t totally lost on the left, but he was lucky to not have price the US on an early goals as he kept Silva onside.

Sacha Kljestan𔃂
He was pretty invisible as the team didn’t get him a lot service on the appropriate. He moved centrally in the second half and was okay.

Maurice Edu𔃁.5
Edu in no way got involved and didn’t close down well either, which was a recipe for disaster.

Jermaine Jones𔃁.five
Comparable to Edu in that the offense didn’t actually flow nicely by way of him, but also failed to track runs including Cazorla on the first objective.

Robbie Rogers𔃂
He was fairly absent, but he did get 1 very good chance, but he pulled it wide.

Juan Agudelo𔃂
He was the most lively attacker for the US running at players, but with out an individual else, he was outnumbered too typically.

Jozy Altidore𔃂
Altidore by no means got considerably service, but he seemed a bit lethargic in his closing down and it created it far too simple for Spain to play out of the back.

Subs:
Steve Cherundolo𔃂.five
The attacks down the proper were far less prevalent in the second half and he was able to push up into the attack as nicely.

Clarence Goodson𔃂
Goodson was solid and he made a great intervention on a Torres breakaway as soon as.

Michael Bradley𔃂.5
He was an upgrade from the first half as he closed down well and had some very good runs from midfield. Despite his lack of playing time at Villa, he looked sharp.

Clint Dempsey𔃂.five
He was playing at a quicker pace than most of the team as he was fast on the ball and generating decisions. The US attack was a lot more crisp when he was on the ball.

Chris Wondolowski𔃂
He was active and tried difficult, but he didn’t get much service to truly judge how powerful he can be.

Alejandro Bedoya𔃂
He was quiet but created a couple nice passes to hold possession, but he did fail to convert a breakaway with a bad touch.

Based on these performances, the beginning lineup I would want the US to use is the following.

Howard
Cherundolo–Goodson–Ream–Bocanegra
Donovan–Bradley–Edu–Dempsey
Altidore–Agudelo

The team, nonetheless, will likely use the group stage as a way of tinkering with this lineup as Edu or Jones could have a spot near Bradley and I also think Bedoya could make the group a four-5-1 with either Donovan, Dempsey or Bedoya playing the position underneath the forward.

2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup: Predictions

Monday, June 6th, 2011

With the tournament beginning later today, it is time to make some final predictions for the tournament. So here it goes.

Group A:
Mexico and Costa Rica should be battling for the top spots for this group and the meeting between them will be fascinating. El Salvador will be third and will have to win the game against Cuba to have any chance. The hierarchy of the group is fairly clear and I see it sticking to that.

Costa Rica 3, Cuba
Mexico three, El Salvador
Costa Rica 2, El Salvador 1
Mexico 5, Cuba 1
El Salvador 2, Cuba
Mexico 2, Costa Rica

Mexico, Costa Rica, and El Salvador advance

Group B:
Honduras ought to take this group and Jamaica have the talent to take the second spot. Guatemala are a scrappy side and will frustrate teams while Grenada will likely struggle. This is one more fairly straight forward group.

Jamaica 3, Grenada
Honduras 1, Guatemala
Jamaica 1, Guatemala 1
Honduras 4, Grenada
Guatemala 2, Grenada
Honduras 1, Jamaica 1

Honduras, Jamaica, and Guatemala advance

Group C:
This is the toughest group to predict. The US should win the group, but the teams below it could all have a chance at second place. Canada are the second most talented, but Panama and Guadeloupe have had success in the tournament. In the end, I see Canada’s talent winning out.

Guadeloupe 1, Panama 1
United States 2, Canada 1
Canada 2, Guadeloupe 2
United States three, Panama 1
Canada 2, Panama 1
United States 2, Guadeloupe

United States and Canada advance

Knockout Round:
The quarterfinals have a fantastic match-up between Honduras and Canada, but in the end, there are no actual upsets as the four powers of CONCACAF all reach the semifinals.

Costa Rica 2, Jamaica 1
Mexico 3, Guatemala
Honduras 2, Canada 1
United States 3, El Salvador 1

Mexico will take the rematch against Costa Rica although The US will have a tough battle against a talented Honduras squad, but superior defending gives them the game.

Mexico 3, Costa Rica 1
United States 2, Honduras 1

This is the final that everybody expects and I expect it to be an exciting attacking battle. Both defenses can be a bit shaky, and they have attackers to take advantage. Even so, the experience and finishing of the forwards will give Mexico the win.

Mexico three, United States 2

Top Scorer:
Hernandez and Ruiz are up there as is Landon Donovan for the United Staets. Nevertheless, my choose is Carlos Expensive. I am going with him since I see him running all over Grenada and having that one great game carry him to the scoring title.

Best XI:
Goalkeeper: Tim Howard (United States)
Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (United States), Maynor Figueroa (Honduras), Rafael Marquez (Mexico)
Midfielders: Clint Dempsey (United States), Landon Donovan (United States), Andres Guardado (Mexico), Atiba Hutchinson (Canada), Wilson Palacios (Honduras)
Forwards: Javier Hernandez (Mexico), Bryan Ruiz (Costa Rica)

Let me know your predictions as nicely.

2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup: Group C Preview

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

Group C is one of the most talented groups with all four teams reaching the knockout stage in the last two gold Cups. 1 of them won’t be generating it this time. Here is a closer look at the most competitive group at the tournament.

Canada:
Player To Watch: Julian De Guzman
Dwayne De Rosario is their star and Atiba Hutchinson is a versatile midfielder. However, Canada will need De Guzman to start producing if they want to be amongst the elite squads in the tournament. If he can run the offense, every thing need to be a lot smoother for them.

Expectations:
Canada are perennial underachievers. Their talent really should put them with the US, Mexico and undoubtedly at the level with Honduras and Costa Rica. Nevertheless, they constantly fall brief. In this tough group, obtaining out will be a great step, but they will be thinking they deserve a spot in the semifinals.

Guadeloupe:
Player To Watch: Stephane Auvray
Guadeloupe are a talented team that have pulled a few upsets in this tournament and they will be looking to continue that trend. Auvray will be key to that as he works to both quit their opponents but also run the team from midfield. Auvray can dictate a game, but lacks consistency, which he will want if Guadeloupe are to advance.

Expectations:
They will expect to get into the knockout round, but they need to also deal with the reality that this is a tough group. Unlike in the past, they won’t sneak up on the teams and they will be ready for them, and therefore, acquiring into the knockout round will be an accomplishment.

Panama:
Player To Watch: Felipe Baloy
Baloy will once once more anchor the team’s defense. They will be looking for big performance from forward Blas Perez as nicely as goalie Jaime Penedo. Baloy, however, has the most expertise in the side and will looked upon for leadership.

Expectations:
They have become regulars in the quarterfinals and will anticipate at least as significantly this time. Nevertheless, they would like to build on that and will be pleased to prevent the US in knockout round as they were eliminated the last two kinds by the US. Even so, in this group, advancing would be a decent accomplishment.

United States:
Player To Watch: Josmer Altidore
Donovan and Dempsey are among a host of well recognized players, but Altidore will be key to them as the most skilled player in the forwards. Agudelo is young and Wondolowski only emerged last season, so Altidore will have to do a lot of carrying of the offensive load for the team.

Expectations:
The US will clearly expect to win it and will view Mexico and maybe Honduras as their only real threats. Long term for them, they will be searching to see how the new players make an impact especially Agudelo and Ream. Even so, with their talent and encounter, they will be disappointed with anything brief of the title.

2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup: Group B Preview

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

Group B of the Gold Cup doesn’t hold the two big powers but there are some dark horses in this group which includes Honduras and Jamaica. Here is closer look at the teams.

Grenada:
Player To Watch: Delroy Facey
With Shalrie Joseph dropping out, the team takes a huge hit. They were already huge underdogs but without having Joseph in midfield, things get a lot tougher. They will to English born Facey to lead their line as the Lincoln City player will require to shine for Grenada to even get a point.

Expectations:
Sadly, Grenada possibly aren’t expecting significantly. They will hope for a result against Guatemala and possibly Jamaica, but it is hard to envision them finishing off the bottom of this group specifically with Joseph not joining the team.

Guatemala:
Player To Watch: Carlos Ruiz
Ruiz did not have a wonderful time in Europe, but he is back in MLS and he will be a danger man for Guatemala once more. They will also require huge performances from Marco Pappa to give Ruiz one thing to latch onto, but Ruiz leads the line for the team.

Expectations:
They will be aiming to get out of the group. They could look to get a surprise victory over Jamaica, but on talent they are the third greatest team. They will defend compactly, with a lot of desire against the leading teams. If they are efficient on the counter, they could advance as the second seed.

Honduras:
Player To Watch: Carlos Pricey
Wilson Palacios and Hendry Thomas should settle the midfield, but the big question for this team has often been the strikers. Walter Martinez is streaky and David Suazo is either unavailable or injured. Pricey used to partner up with Pavon up best, but Pavon is no longer in the picture. Costly is mobile and works hard and could be a player to shine at the Gold Cup.

Expectations:
They should win this group although Jamaica won’t make it straightforward. Even so, Honduras almost certainly have their eyes on a bigger prize. The semifinals will seem to be a minimum, but they have the talent and will definitely believe they are capable of beating either Mexico or the United States.

Jamaica:
Player To Watch: Omar Cummings
The team is athletic and full of speed and Cummings is a best example of that. He has the speed to stretch a defense, but is also capable of scoring the objectives and setting up others. He had a great season in MLS and will be looked on being the principal man for the Jamaica attack.

Expectations:
There is talent and athleticism in this group, but their cohesiveness as a group can be questioned specifically defensively. Building on their strong showing in World Cup qualifying, they will expect to minimally get out of the group and if they can stay away from Mexico and the US in the quarters, they will really feel they have a opportunity of reaching the semifinals.

Major League Soccer: Gameweek 12 I Know The Score

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

Last week, the league seemed turned up on its head as Actual Salt Lake finally lost at property in league play for the 1st time over 2 years, although Portland lost their winning streak at house to start. The teams will begin feeling the losses of their Gold Cup players this weekend, so there could be far more inconsistency.

Gameweek 12 Picks:
Los Angeles vs. DC United
Los Angeles will have some absences, but they have sufficient talent remaining to defeat a DC United side that has stayed on the West Coast because last weekend. Los Angeles three, DC United 1

Toronto FC vs. Kansas City
Toronto’s defense disappeared last weekend against Philadelphia. They will play greater and get a narrow win over Kansas City. Toronto FC 2, Kansas City 1

New York Red Bulls vs. Columbus
New York have been having trouble turning their domination of possession into wins and Columbus will be a tough defense to crack, but they will get it carried out at residence. New York Red Bulls 1, Columbus

Chicago vs. Seattle Sounders FC
Seattle will be confident following winning right after winning at Salt Lake, but Chicago ought to have the new manager increase with Frank Klopas taking over and it will be sufficient for them to earn a draw. Chicago 2, Seattle Sounders FC

FC Dallas vs. New England
FC Dallas surrendered a late goal to Houston despite having a man advantage. That late goal will have them focused on this game as New England fall on the road. FC Dallas 2, New England

Colorado vs. Philadelphia Union
Philadelphia found their offense, but they have a considerably tougher test this weekend, but Colorado without having Omar Cummings won’t have the firepower to take benefit. Colorado 1, Philadelphia Union 1

Actual Salt Lake vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
Vancouver have a new manager so they need to come out motivated, but RSL will want to rebound from their loss and will do so emphatically. Actual Salt Lake 2, Vancouver Whitecaps

Chivas USA vs. Portland Timbers
Chivas are beginning to gain some steam and Portland have struggled on the road. Points won’t change for Portland in this game. Chivas USA 2, Portland Timbers 1

San Jose vs. Houston
San Jose have counted on Wondolowski to score their objectives and without him, they won’t be able to get past a solid Houston defense. San Jose , Houston

Columbus vs. Actual Salt Lake
Columbus have been powerful defensively all year and Real Salt Lake are searching for an offensive spark to replace Morales. They won’t locate it in this game. Columbus 1, Actual Salt Lake 1

Last Week: 2-8
Total: 52-55

2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup: Group A Preview

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

The Gold Cup starts this Sunday. Mexico will be looking to defend its 2009 title, but the United States is the last winner when both of the teams sent their greatest squads. Mexico and the US have dominated, but Costar Rica and Honduras are teams that are capable of pulling off an upset. As part of a preview, here is a look at Group A.

Costa Rica:
Player To Watch: Bryan Ruiz
This team is fairly solid, but their forwards Saborio and Ruiz are their stars. Ruiz has been on the verge of a move away from his club FC Twente and he delivers a excellent mix of speed and size. The size of the two upfront could trigger problems, but Ruiz is the much more deadly finisher and is a player opponents have to watch.

Expectation:
Costa Rica will see the semifinals are fairly significantly expected. They have shown the capacity to give Mexico difficulties in the last Gold Cup, but that Mexico side wasn’t at full strength. This time around, they will anticipate to win against anyone but the United States, Mexico, and Honduras.

Cuba:
Player To Watch: Roberto Linares
Cuba is always a mystery as all of their players play domestically. Linares is one of their younger stars who could be asked to play a large role for the side. Other than Linares, Jaime Colome and Yenier Marquez will present encounter for the squad.

Expectation:
Regrettably, Cuba’s Gold Cup trips have been about how numerous defections they have had. They won’t anticipate a entire lot in terms of wins, but they will likely put up a decent fight as they attempt to sit back and defend initial and strike on the counter.

El Salvador:
Player To Watch: Arturo Alvarez
They have a number of players who can create chances like Alvarez and Quintanilla. Alvarez is an electric player, but he usually doesn’t have the consistency he needs. He will be counted on being the spark for their attack and might be asked to score goals with no prominent forward.

Expectation:
El Salvador will expect to get to the knockout stage, but given the toughness of their group, they may possibly not expect significantly more than that. With a favorable draw, they could pull off an upset in the knockout, but they will be expecting a win against Cuba and hope for the bet otherwise.

Mexico:
Player To Watch: Andres Guardado
Javier Hernandez will be the star, but the question will be no matter whether he can get service. Giovani dos Santos and Guardado will be crucial in that role. Guardado had a tough year as his team got relegated, but he is still the most consistent attacking midfielder for Mexico. If he can discover his form, it would be enormous for Mexico.

Expectation:
This group is a bit tricky with Costa Rica in it, but Mexico are still the class of the group. However, their sights will be set on winning the entire factor. They have had slow starts in the past, but I expect them to do well and they will actually see the US as their only actual danger to challenge for the title.

United States vs. Spain Preview

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

This should be a tough test for the US as they prepare for the Gold Cup. This ought to be a excellent game for the US to work on their defense and they may well attempt using this game as preparation for Mexico rather than the rest of their opponents where they will likely have more of the possession. With that in mind, I expect Bob Bradley to go more with a 4-2-3-1 like the following.

Howard
Cherundolo–Onyewu–Ream–Bocanegra
Bradley–Jones
Dempsey–Edu–Donovan
Altidore

I anticipate Goodson to also get some playing time as nicely as Bornstein who wants the playing time. Given the proximity of the game with their group opener on Canada, these players will likely be rested even beginning at halftime, so anticipate a lot of adjustments.

For the game itself, it need to be straight forward. Spain will have possession and they will make them work. The principal points for the US to focus on will be defending and staying compact while also striking speedily on the counter on the wings. The defending will be the greatest key as there are a number of players that have not had enough playing time for their clubs. It is difficult to tell what has happened in the practices, but now is the time for Bradley to set his lineup and give them a stern test.

The players with the most to prove will be the bench players. Wondolowski and Rogers could have moments in order to show they deserve a lot more playing time. However, for me, 1 of the massive questions will be where Spector fits in with this squad. He could be the right back, but he also could give them depth in midfield. One more player to see where he is utilized tactically is Kljestan. In the past he has been employed as a holding midfielder and struggled, but he has had great moments in more attacking positions.

Even so, in the end, it will be hard to evaluate the attacking alternatives as they will be without the ball, but this is a game in which the US defense can hopefully get sorted out.
